Timeline
Mountain Valley Hospice was formed in the basement of First Presbyterian Church in downtown Mount Airy by Mrs. Joan Woltz and Mary Alice Lewis along with The Altrusa Club under the name “Hospice of Surry County.”
Established in Elkin, NC.
“Hospice of Surry County” and “Hospice of Yadkin County” Merge
Opening the Galax office allowed us to expand into our neighboring state of Virginia.
Hospice of Surry County, Northern Hospice, and Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County merge to become Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care.
Hospice of Surry and Yadkin County merged with Northern Hospice of Surry County. In 2006, we renamed Hospice of Surry and Yadkin county to D.B.A. Mountain Valley Hospice.
Built in 2009, The Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home is our first hospice care center. Located in Dobson, NC and spanning 22,000 sq-ft., our Woltz Hospice Home is equipped to accommodate patients in Surry and surrounding counties with its 20 patient suites.
We opened our first Re-Sale Shoppe at 461 N South Street in Mount Airy, NC. At the Re-Sale Shoppe, people can donate their gently used household items for us to sell. The proceeds from each sale goes toward funding uninsured/underinsured patient care.
Opening our Martinsville office not only allows us to “Create the best experience for those facing serious illness…Every Patient, Every Family, Every Time.”
On this day, we opened our second hospice care center. Located in Yadkinville, NC, this 10,000 sq. ft. facility accommodates patients in and around Yadkin County.
In order to serve more patrons, we opened our second Re-Sale Shoppe at 665 S Main St #105 in Sparta, NC.

In continuing our mission to create the best experience for those facing serious illness in April of 2021, Mountain Valley opened the first of our two Serious Illness Specialists offices. These locations are focused on providing patients with relief from disease-related symptoms and stress. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families.
To expand our Serious Illness services to more patients, Mountain Valley opened the second of our Serious Illness Specialists offices in King, NC. This allows us to serve both Stokes and surrounding counties.
