Jimmy Carter leads by example: The benefits of early hospice enrollment
In February, former President Jimmy Carter and his family made the decision to enroll in hospice care. Unsurprisingly, this news spurred nationwide expectations that Mr. Carter would soon be passing away. Now, 6 months later, Mr. Carter remains in his home in Georgia spending time with his loved ones.
The former president’s decision, while sobering, is a wonderful gift to Americans – It encourages a new perspective on hospice care.
The Carters’ decision to maintain hospice care displays a remarkable understanding of the benefits of hospice care for both patients and families throughout the serious illness journey and at the end of life.

As he now approaches what has been reported to be his “final chapter,” Mr. Carter’s decision to enter hospice and to continue publicizing that choice is a fitting final gift of candor from a former president to an American public that has long been uncomfortable with our own mortality.
Families often hear the word “hospice” and think “surrender,” that they are giving up on their loved one and accepting the loss. Dr. Lamas goes on to share that half of patients in hospice are enrolled for only 18 days or less, and one-tenth are in hospice for only one or two days before they die. It is easy to understand how this happens. To choose this path is to acknowledge that we will all end, a reality that few of us are willing to face until there is no choice left.
While hospice is, by definition, end-of-life care, it’s important to understand that hospice isn’t about death – it’s about life. Enrolling in hospice care before a patient’s final days can drastically improve the quality of life for patients and families well before the time when most families even consider the option.
